GeoTag (Mark 1) Specifications
Updated: 16 December 2024
Introduction
GeoTag provides advanced GPS-enabled asset tracking for professional equipment, enabling near real-time location updates, improving asset security, and reducing operational losses.
GeoTag provides reliable coverage even in remote locations, with zero reliance on bluetooth-enabled smartphone proximity as is the case with consumer solutions such as Apple AirTag.
This document outlines the technical specifications to support integration of our standard model GeoTag trackers into host products to provide tracking capabilities.
System Overview
The standard GeoTag tracker comprises a self-contained, reduced form-factor tracker module, reliably capturing and serving location data. The tracker includes:
-
GSM & GPRS modules for data transmission
-
Global SIM for automatic network acquisition in over 170 countries
-
GPS & AGPS module for precise location and time capture
-
Location fallbacks:
-
WiFi-proximity location capture
-
LBS Cell Tower triangulation location capture
-
When in areas with no GSM coverage GeoTag continues to capture location data, transmitting data points when coverage next resumes.

Alternative connector types
-
External antennae, allowing placement within metal housing
Please contact TAZAAR to discuss your custom requirements.
Location Frequency
Default interval for updates is 10 minutes. This can optionally be pre-configured by TAZAAR to between 10 seconds and 120 minutes, with direct impact battery consumption.
GeoTag trackers are motion-sensitive, and will automatically sleep when stationary to conserve battery.
Integration Requirements
Circuitry Integration: The GeoTag tracker is designed to be integrated into a host product’s circuitry with minimal interference with existing systems. Separate step-down conversion is required for safe integration into products operating at higher voltages, e.g. 12V.
Positioning: The GPS antenna is located in the flat side of the tracker adjacent to the indicator LEDs and SIM access. For optimal readings this side should face toward the sky and ideally separated from metal surfaces.
Configuration: All GeoTag trackers are fully pre-configured prior to delivery and are expected to work immediately on first charge without further configuration.
LED Indicators
The GeoTag tracker comes with 3x colour LEDs for indicating its status. These are accessible via the SIM installation flap on the flat side of the tracker. Carefully lift the loose flap with a pin or blade, taking care not to catch the SIM slot underneath. The LEDs are located on the furthest side of the SIM slot from the micro-USB charging port.
Red LED = Power Signal: Fast Flash (Low Battery), Slow Flash (Normal), Continuous (Charging)
Orange LED = GSM Signal: Fast Flash (Searching), Slow Flash (Normal), Continuous (No Signal)
Blue LED = GPS Signal: Fast Flash (Searching), Slow Flash (Normal)
Battery percentage can also be seen on the GeoTag web platform.
Power On/Off
After first power-on, GeoTag remains on until the battery reaches zero or manually powered off. Even after the battery reaches zero, GeoTag will power on automatically if the battery is partially recharged. This means it is not necessary to use the power button at all, if so desired.
The power button is accessible without lifting the SIM installation flap. It is directly next to the flap on the Micro-USB side, centre-axis, indicated by a 1-2mm permanent marker pen dot.
Manual Power Off: Holding the power button for 10 seconds will cause all three LEDs to light up. Immediately release the power button and the device will power off.
Manual Power On: Hold the power button for 3 seconds until first LED activity, then release.
Global Coverage
GeoTag utilises a global SIM card which automatically selects a local operator in over 170 countries and regions including Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Oceania. Please discuss anticipated regions with your TAZAAR account manager to ensure coverage is available.
Please note that the availability of network technologies (e.g., 2G, 3G, 4G) varies by country and is subject to change over time. While we strive to provide accurate coverage information, changes to network infrastructure may impact service in some regions beyond our control.
In the event a region becomes unavailable during the initial term which is critical for your application of GeoTag, we offer a complimentary upgrade to a newer or equivalent model where possible; if not possible to provide a model with appropriate coverage, a pro-rata refund may be offered.
Compliance
The GeoTag tracker conforms with RoHS and CE requirements.
