GeoTag’s First Field Test: Tackling the Dragon Ride Challenge

Lisa Stafford

2 Dec 2024

Aptly named for the Year of the Dragon, this grueling 100-mile journey through the valleys and towering peaks of the Brecon Beacons put GeoTag to the ultimate test. Lisa, TAZAAR’s CEO, took the helm—literally—as GeoTag was secured under her bike, with an Apple AirTag taped to the handlebars for a head-to-head comparison.

A Journey Fuelled by Determination

The morning of Sunday, June 14, dawned with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. For Lisa, the challenge was twofold: conquer the unrelenting climbs and descents of the Beacons with minimal training and prove GeoTag’s capabilities across urban, rural, and mountainous terrains. Without her mobile phone (an oversight that turned into a fortuitous testing condition), the mission took on even greater stakes: GeoTag’s data would be Lisa’s only lifeline, guiding Ashley, our CTO, to her location at the finish line.

As the route unfolded, Lisa endured wobbly legs, steep climbs, and breath-taking valley views. Along the way, she lost one riding companion to an accidental detour and gained another in Sarah, a seasoned Ironman athlete who offered a steady hand through the toughest miles.

Performance Under Pressure

Both trackers were subjected to identical conditions: same bike, same rider, and no phone.

Here’s how GeoTag performed against the AirTag:

  • Coverage: Maintained strong connectivity across rural and urban zones, even in the Brecon Beacon’s remote areas.

  • Location Accuracy: Delivered precise, replayable location history with timestamps.

  • Advanced Insights: Provided route, speed, and directional data.

  • Robust Battery Life: Lasted over three days with 10-minute tracking intervals, with extendable settings for longer journeys.

  • Apple AirTag Challenges

  • Limited Range: Bluetooth-dependent tracking meant frequent coverage gaps in rural areas.

  • No Real-Time Updates: Lacked location history or directional data.

  • Reliance on Ecosystem: Required proximity to Apple devices with active connectivity.

  • GeoTag proved its mettle, offering consistent and actionable data while the AirTag struggled with patchy coverage and limited utility for a long-distance event like this.

A New Standard for Tracking

The Dragon Ride wasn’t just a test of endurance for Lisa; it was a validation of GeoTag’s real-world capabilities. By delivering reliable tracking and advanced features in a challenging environment, GeoTag solidified its potential as a game-changer for industries that demand precision and reliability.
